Take a stroll through gorgeous Senshu Park, even more beautiful during Japan’s famous cherry blossom season (or in the autumn, when the leaves change color). Here is where you can explore a replica of the historic Kubota Castle’s watchtower and the nearby museum.
If you’re not around for the Kanto Festival (which has been in existence for more than 350 years) in September, a visit to the Kanto Museum is a must. The friendly, knowledgeable staff gives you a tour and some background about the festival; ask politely, and you might get permission to carry around a bamboo pole full of cheerful lanterns, a substitute for actually attending the event itself.
Nature lovers and travelers with children will want to see the charming Omoriyama Zoo, which is small but still contains rare animals (which may change from season to season).
Interested in the religious history of Akita? Not only are there shrines here, but the Our Lady of Akita Convent as well. A quiet, lovely place to escape the hustle of the city, you’ll find Catholic nuns surrounded by lush gardens and a Japanese-style church.
