A passport is a U.S. citizen's key to international travel. If you do not already possess a valid passport, you should apply several months in advance, especially if your destination requires a visa. Make sure you review all passport requirements applicable for your travel plans by visiting www.travel.state.gov. For example, when traveling to certain countries, your passport must be valid for several months beyond the date in which you expect to complete your travel and return home. Note that passports for children under 16 are valid for five years, while adult passports are valid for 10 years. Please check expiration dates carefully.
