Paros, Greece Cruise Port

While there are many Greek islands, the island and cruise port of Paros, Greece is the Cyclades region's boating and transportation hub. This gorgeous tourist spot is a pleasant mix of traditional villages and beach activities, with roots in Greek antiquity and myth. Legend has it that the island was originally colonized by Arcadians (people from the central and eastern part of the Peloponnese peninsula), although it was the arrival of the Ionians who helped the island attain prosperity. Eventually, Paros was conquered by the Ottoman Turks but gained independence from them in the 1820s. Paros became known for its white marble, and Parian marble quarried here during Greece's classical period. While you can still find the quarries, mining is no longer done here. The island's capital is Parikia, a picturesque town with many historic attractions. Listed below are a handful of our favorite experiences when cruising to Paros, Greece:

  • Parikia Town is on the western side of the island, and its most popular spot for both day and night activities. With charming streets and friendly people, it's definitely visitor-friendly. Two of its most popular historic landmarks are the preserved windmill within its port, and the 17th century Venetian Castle that overlooks the village.

  • The Panayia Ekatondapiliani Cathedral or "Church of 100 Doors" is possibly Parikia's most fascinating attraction and a popular pilgrimage spot. Despite its name, it doesn't have 100 doors. It does have a long past, dating back to the year 326, and stepping inside is like going back in time.

  • East of Parikia is the quaint fishing town called Naoussa. Considered one of the prettiest villages in the Cyclades, Naoussa has smaller, locally-owned shops, monuments to explore, and amazing scenery.

  • On an island full of some of the best beaches in Greece, it can be hard to choose just one. A popular spot is Martselo Beach, opposite the Parikia harbor and one of the larger places for fun in the sun. You can rent umbrellas or go without shade and enjoy the crystal clear waters. Thanks to its size, the beach tends not to get too overcrowded.
