Patmos, Greece Cruise Port

If you ever wanted to step into the pages of the Bible, then you'll want to visit the religiously significant cruise port of Patmos, Greece. This island in the Aegean Sea includes the Cave of the Apocalypse, where John of Patmos (early Christians say John the Apostle) was said to have the visions that led to the writing of the New Testament's Book of Revelation. Although a small island of around 3,000 residents, it's rich in archaeological finds, without getting too much mention in ancient texts; most early people identified as being descendants of Dorians and Ionians. Even though the island has its famous legacy, many raids destroyed several Christian structures between the 7th and 9th centuries. And like most Greek islands, its birth is still surrounded by myth: Patmos came into existence because of the goddess Artemis. Here are some of our favorite experiences when cruising to Patmos, Greece:

Near the Cave of the Apocalypse is the Monastery of Saint John the Theologian, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Originally begun around the year 1088 by soldier-priest John Christodoulos, monks still live here to guard its many manuscripts. They also keep an eye on the relics, including the skull of Saint Thomas the Apostle. It's a large structure, so wear good walking shoes.
Patmos' capital town Chora (also called Hora) is a charming area full of historic building. It overlooks the harbor and not only provides a great view of the sea, but is an excellent place to do some shopping and dine at any number of its wonderful restaurants.
The three Patmos Windmills in Chora (and considered part of the monastery) were built in were built in 1588 and in 1863. First used to produce flour, they fell from use in the 1950s and were eventually restored to their original appearance and design, becoming an important part of the island's landscape.
After all of the exploring, wander down to the lovely Psili Ammos Beach near Chora. With a stretch of sand and clear waters, it's more remote, for those who are looking for some privacy.
