Port Mahon Cruise Port

Within the Balearic Islands is the Mediterranean cruise port Mahon on the island of Minorca (or Menorca), Spain. Also called Mao-Mahon, the city has one of the largest natural harbors in the world. Despite its size, the waters are still mostly clear—just what you would expect when traveling to an island in the Mediterranean Sea. The area is rich in history and is thought to be named for Carthaginian general Mago Barca, who was Hannibal's brother; Barca arrived here in 205 B.C. It eventually became part of the Eastern Empire, while the island later went through multiple ownership disputes, chiefly among the British, French and Spanish. Spain finally took over for good in the early 1800s. Foodies may be familiar with Mahon's famous cheese, and Minorca as a whole is known for its dairy production. Here are a handful of our favorite experiences when cruising to Mahon, Minorca, Spain:

• For an invigorating walk, take the path called Cami de Cavalls, around since ancient times. While the trek around the entire island might be too time consuming, you can explore just the Mahon section (which is the first stage of 20). The path not only showcases historic areas and artifacts, but leads to otherwise inaccessible beaches.
   
• Completed in 1922, the black and white striped Favaritx Lighthouse on Cap de Favaritx not only provides a view of the sparkling sea, but the unique gray rocks that surround it give the feeling of being in another world.
   
• History buffs will enjoy the Fortaleza de la Mola (or La Mola de Menorca), which is also known as the Fortress of Isabel II. Originally begun in the 18th century, the fortress was never actually opened until 1852. It was armed and ready to defend after that, and a tour around the fort also provides some excellent views.
   
• For a break after hiking and history, visit the Sa Mesquida Beach with its fine, white sands and plenty of space for basking in the sun. Because boats can't come too close, there are a lot of areas to swim and snorkel. The historic restaurant nearby features fresh seafood.
