Runavik, Faroe Islands Cruise Port

Cruising through the North Atlantic Ocean and North Sea between Scotland, Norway, and Iceland is the port of Runavik, a village in the archipelago known as the Faroe Islands. A self-governing region of the Kingdom of Denmark, it's on the south side of the isle called Eysturoy, which is the second largest of the Faroe Islands. It is an important port used for both fishing and as a supply base for the oil industry in the area. Pulling into the harbor called Kongshavn (which was developed in the late 1990s), you'll see rolling hills dotted with charming houses where the town's nearly 3,800 friendly residents greet tourists with good cheer. With festivals in the summer months and a multitude of outdoor activities in which to partake all year long, this is a great stop for hikers and nature lovers. Listed below are a handful of our favorite experiences when cruising to Runavik, Faroe Islands:

  • Less than a mile south of town is Lake Toftavatn, perfect for a hike (the entire lake only takes around two hours). It's relatively flat, so the walk isn't at all arduous. Bird and animal fans will get their fill of creatures to spot, and the heather-covered stroll is also a delight for anyone who adores flora as much as fauna.

  • Walk back to town for a bite at Hotel Runavik, which is centrally situated. You'll also find places to shop, the harbor area, and bus stops which will get you to other parts of Eysturoy. The new cultural venue called Loksholl hosts conferences as well as cultural events.

  • Since Runavik is located on Skalafjorour, the longest fjord in the Faroe Islands, it's a treasure trove of possibilities for water sports. Rowing and diving are especially popular here, with boat trips for hire to get you to the neighboring islands for exploration.

  • Head about a mile and a half north (or about a 15 minute walk from the Tourist Information Office) to find the Museum Forni in Glyvrar, a 17th century home open to the public, where charming and well-preserved rooms transport you back in time.
