Maizuru, Japan Cruise Port

Cruising along the Sea of Japan, you'll find the port of Maizuru, Japan, a city of around 84,000 residents and located within the Kyoto Prefecture. With mild to very warm (sometimes hot) temperatures throughout the year, its spot on the scenic Maizuru Bay provide multiple opportunities to explore the area's culture, as well as see Japan's famous cherry blossoms in the spring. Maizuru became an important naval port in the early 20th century; once the port was up and running, it also became a place for warships to hang out during the Russo-Japanese War. The Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force has their headquarters in Maizuru today, which participates in peacekeeping operations as well as watching over sea lanes and patrolling territorial waters. With an extensive collection of more than 12,000 materials related to the World War II internment and survivors’ repatriation, the Maizuru Repatriation Memorial Museum is a reminder of how war affects the living. History buffs will be fascinated by the city's role during the war and how it helped needful citizens afterward.
To see Maizuru from on high, visit Gorogadake Park and the Goro Sky Tower, a popular local attraction that provides a dramatic 360 degree view of the coastline and mountains. It also ranks among one of the best sea viewpoints in all of Japan.
Part of the Saigoku Kannon pilgrimage, the Buddhist Matsunoo-dera Temple is away from the city on Mt. Aoba and overlooks the rugged coastline. Walking to this lovely temple recreates the steps of faithful pilgrims; the temple itself makes you feel like you've stepped back in time.
From serene back into bustling, the Maizuru Port Toretore Center Road Station is an amazing shopping area full of fresh seafood and produce. You can even have your catch grilled right there. You can't miss the building – it's the one with the bright red crab across the top.
