Vis, Croatia Cruise Port

Within the Adriatic Sea between Italy and Croatia, you'll find the cruise port and small island of Vis, Croatia. The farthest inhabited island from the Croatian mainland, there are two main settlements on both the east and west coasts. With roots that go back to at least the Neolithic Period (between 4,500 and 2,000 B.C.), Vis was inhabited by Dionysius the Elder in the 4th century B.C., who founded a colony called Issa. The island eventually fell under the rule of the Republic of Venice and remained that way until the end of the 18th century; the remains of that influence are still felt today, within both the architecture and some dialects. Today, the economy of Vis revolves around agriculture, fishing, and tourism – and for wine lovers, about 20% of the island’s viable land is covered in vineyards. Here are some of our favorite experiences when cruising to Via, Croatia:

  • Stiniva Bay is on the northern part of the island, its beautiful cove is a favorite among beachgoers. It's much easier to get there by boat that by car or foot (the latter requires a 20-30 minute climb), but the payoff is a one-of-a-kind experience, including magnificent views and fascinating geological formations.

  • The highest point on the island at around 1,926 feet, Mount Hum has a small chapel and military radar station (although the latter is closed to the public). It will give you the best panoramic view of the island and a lovely view of the town of Komiza; if you have the opportunity, check out the peak at sunrise or sunset for a gorgeous photo opp.

  • Check out more of Komiza for churches, historic sites, and activities such as horseback riding. Divers will also find a diving center here, which locates all of the hotspots around the island. History lovers will enjoy getting close to the various underwater wrecks, from the sunken cargo steamer Teti to the Greek merchant ship Vassilios, among others.

  • Visit the Bavul Art Gallery to see locally-made craftsmanship. The small space is awash with painting, sculptures, and glasswork that you won't find anywhere else.
