Saint Malo, France Cruise Port

Within the English Channel is the breathtaking cruise port of Saint Malo, France. Like stepping back in time, this coastal city in northwest France's cultural region of Brittany is earmarked by tall granite walls that surround the old town area, once notoriously run by royalty-sanctioned privateers (legal pirates). Saint Malo's history reaches back to at least the Middle Ages, when it was separated from the mainland and controlled the open sea around its fortifications. Today, it's easy to reach other parts of Brittany and England, thanks to the city's ferry service; with Saint Malo being Brittany's most visited place, tourists typically stay put to enjoy the history and the amazing assortment of restaurants, some of which feature famous dishes made from oysters farmed in nearby Cancale. Follow your meal with sweets from an area crêperie, and you may never want to leave. Here are some our favorite experiences when cruising to Saint Malo, France:

  • The Saint Malo ramparts surround the city's oldest section and provide amazing panoramic views of the English Channel below. There are plenty of statues that honor the area's famous residents, such as explorer Jacques Cartier, who claimed Canada for France. There are stairs to climb, so wear comfortable shoes.

  • See how the pirates spent their daily lives at La Demeure de Corsaire (Privateer's House), now a museum. Used mostly for business during its heyday, each room served a purpose, from welcoming wealthy merchants in large, ornate rooms, to doing top-secret negotiations in the smaller ones.

  • The Cathédrale St-Vincent (St. Vincent Cathedral) is a survivor of World War II fighting. Originally built between the 12th and 18th centuries, religious history buffs will enjoy its simple beauty, stained glass windows, and Jacques Cartier's tomb.

  • When it's time to relax after all of the sightseeing, visit Plage du Sillon, Saint Malo's largest sand beach (not far from the ramparts). Not only is it a great spot for swimming and sunbathing, its winds make it a prime place for kitesurfing.
