Puntarenas, whose Spanish translation literally means “sand point”, is the capital and also the largest city in the province that goes by the same name. It is found in Costa Rica on the country's Pacific coast. The province is divided into the North and the South with the largest section being the latter. The city's port which was built in 1840 is considered to be among the country's main ports. The city was discovered in 1519 by a man called Hernan Ponce de Leon, and has since then had a rich history of trade.
