Overview
Quepos, Costa Rica, is a charming coastal town nestled on a tropical inlet at the edge of a vibrant rainforest, serving as a popular gateway to the incredibly diverse flora and fauna of Manuel Antonio National Park. While renowned globally as a premier destination for sport fishing, Quepos offers much more than just angling adventures. Its proximity to one of Costa Rica's most celebrated national parks means visitors have unparalleled access to pristine beaches, lush rainforests teeming with wildlife, and a myriad of outdoor activities.
The town itself provides a lively atmosphere with a variety of restaurants, bars, and shops, particularly around the modern Marina Pez Vela. From exhilarating zip-lining through the jungle canopy and exploring biodiverse mangrove ecosystems to relaxing on stunning white-sand beaches and spotting sloths and monkeys in their natural habitat, Quepos promises an unforgettable blend of adventure, nature, and authentic Costa Rican charm for cruise passengers.

Just south of Quepos, Manuel Antonio National Park is a must-see. Despite being one of Costa Rica's smallest national parks, it boasts spectacular biodiversity, featuring beautiful beaches, lush tropical rainforests, and well-maintained hiking trails. Keep an eye out for diverse wildlife, including brown-throated three-toed sloths, Hoffmann's two-toed sloths, several species of monkeys (white-faced, howler, squirrel), iguanas, and a wide array of birds.
Tip: The park is closed on Tuesdays. It's highly recommended to go with a certified local guide; they have telescopes and an expert eye for spotting camouflaged wildlife, significantly enhancing your viewing experience. Arrive early, as visitor numbers are limited daily.

The Quepos area, including the rainforest and surrounding wetlands, is a haven for exotic birds. Early morning tours or simply observing the canopy can reward you with sightings of toucans, macaws, and various colourful species.
Tip: Head to the trails around the Marina Pez Vela area in the early morning; the trees surrounding the marina are surprisingly active with avian life.

For an adrenaline rush and a unique perspective of the rainforest, embark on a canopy tour or zip-lining adventure. Soar through the jungle canopy, experiencing the thrill of flying while potentially spotting unique Costa Rican wildlife from above.
Tip: Choose a reputable tour operator with strong safety records. Wear comfortable, closed-toe shoes and secure any loose items.

Take a relaxing and educational boat tour through the Damas Island mangroves. This intricate maze of wetlands is a rich ecosystem where you can spot a variety of wildlife, including sloths, monkeys, iguanas, crocodiles, alligators, and numerous bird species.
Tip: Opt for a tour during high tide, as this allows the boats to navigate deeper into the mangrove channels, increasing your chances of wildlife sightings.

Just a short distance from the port, Playa Espadilla is a long, beautiful white-sand beach perfect for sunbathing, swimming, or taking surf lessons. It's a popular spot with plenty of vendors where you can rent chairs and umbrellas.
Tip: Walk towards the northern or southern ends of the beach for slightly less crowded spots. Be aware of strong currents if swimming far out.

Stroll through the charming town of Quepos, which is easy to navigate on foot. Discover local shops, restaurants, and bars. The Marina Pez Vela area offers an upscale, sophisticated vibe with a great selection of waterfront dining options, cafes, and shops, perfect for enjoying a meal with ocean views or simply admiring the yachts.
Tip: Visit the local farmer's market (La Feria) if your cruise aligns with a Friday evening or Saturday morning for fresh produce and local crafts.
