Les Saintes, Guadeloupe Cruise Port

For a truly heavenly trip, cruising to the port of Les Saintes or Îles des Saintes, Guadeloupe will lead you to paradise – although rumor has it the residents are descended from pirates. This "Islands of the Saints" is a small archipelago of the French Antilles and a dependency of Guadeloupe, which is a region of France (although physically located closer to North America). Les Saintes is comprised of two larger islands and seven uninhabited îlets; it's considered one of the Caribbean's best-kept secrets, as it's somewhat off the beaten path. Terre-de-Haut Island and Terre-de-Bas Island are the inhabited areas, with fishing as their primary source of income, as the terrain doesn't allow for agricultural pursuits. Terre-de-Haut (Land of High) is the island most accommodating to tourists and thus far the only one with overnight facilities. Here are some of our favorite experiences for the cruise port of Les Saintes, Guadeloupe:

  • For those interested in a climb and taking in a spectacular view, a trek up Le Chameau (The Camel) will get you in touch with nature, including curious goats along the way. The highest point on Terre-de-Haut, there's also a tower leftover from the island's military history, but the scenery from the mountain itself is perfect.

  • The peaceful beach at Plage de Pompierre prohibits any motor or sailing boats to come into the harbor. It's also protected from trade winds, making the long stretch of sand delightful for basking in the sun. For some shade, check out the nearby coconut grove.

  • History buffs will enjoy the Fort Napoléon des Saintes on Terre-de-Haut. Originally called Fort Louis, it was destroyed by the British, rebuilt, and named after Napoleon III – but never used in battle. Instead, it was used as a prison and eventually turned into a museum to showcase Les Saintes. It includes a botanical garden that highlights local succulent plants and iguanas.

  • Diving is extremely popular around the islands, and one of the most popular companies to take you out is La Dive Bouteille. With patient instructors and the unique Caribbean marine life, it’s a one of a kind adventure.
