Jayapura, New Guinea Cruise Port

Located on the island of New Guinea on Yos Sudarso Bay, Jayapura is the capital and largest city of the Indonesian province of Papua. It borders the Jayapura Regency on the west, Keerom Regency to the south, the nation of Papua New Guinea on the east, and the Pacific Ocean to the north. Because of its central location, trade and tourism are in abundance. Because of its hub status, a railroad beginning in Jayapura with plans of connecting much of New Guinea has a tentative completion date of 2030. Beyond its beautiful harbor and scenic hillside, there are only a few roads in the town making walking the primary mode of transportation. Since many of the sightseeing hot spots are within reasonable walking distance, the numerous walkers add to the city’s charm and lower its carbon footprint. There are many restaurants that serve traditional Indonesian foods, and there is shopping all around the city.

• Skow Village lies right at the border post between New Guinea and Papua New Guinea. It’s a great stop on any tour to capture pictures of their wondrous monuments.
   
• For an excellent bird’s-eye view of the entire city, take a hike up Jayapura City Hill. While the trip up is long and winding, it’s not too treacherous and the destination is worth it.
   
• Any couples traveling in the area must consider traveling to the beautiful Love Lake. A bit off the beaten path, it’s simply a gorgeous place to admire the scenery or watch sunrises and sunsets.
   
• The Hamadi Souvenir Market has many shops with unique, local souvenirs you won’t be able to find anywhere else. And since all the stores are in close proximity to one another, it’s wise and easy to shop around before making any purchases.
