Trier, Germany Cruise Port

Perhaps the oldest town in Germany, Trier is in the Moselle Valley and is very close to the border with Luxembourg. Cruise through Trier and experience the Moselle Valley’s beauty firsthand. While records show that Trier was founded by Augustus in 16 B.C. and was considered a second Rome for the power it had, it is thought that Trier is even older. Archeologists have found remnants of a Celtic civilization and legend says the Assyrians had a colony here. Nowadays the city is in German control, but plays up its history with a Roman festival and lots of old sites for cruisers to visit. Featured below are a few of our favorite experiences for the cruise port of Trier, Germany:

  • Explore the ruins of three Roman baths, including the largest one north of the Alps.

  • The Trier Cathedral dates back to roman times, but is most importantly the guardian of the Holy Tunic, which some believe was the robe Jesus wore when he died. However, this artifact is rarely on display.

  • Learn about Trier’s rich past at the Stadtmuseum Simeonstift which examines the city’s two millennia of history.

  • Jump into the 19th century with a visit to the Karl Marx House, which is where the philosopher grew up. You’ll learn about his personal history and see a collection of first editions of his writing.
