Dusseldorf, Germany Cruise Port

Take a lazy cruise along the Rhine River to reach the historic cruise port of Düsseldorf, Germany. The city is actually split in half by the Rhine, with the Old Town area on the east bank and the more modern area to the west. One of Germany's greatest economic cities, Düsseldorf combines professional and creative services, as well as excellent fashion sense; in fact, there are famous fashion trade fairs that visit the city each year, such as Boot Messe and Igedo. Like many European cities, Düsseldorf's roots extend back hundreds of years. Fishing settlements peppered the area in the 7th and 8th centuries where the Rhine meets the small Düssel River, which evolved into present-day Düsseldorf. The city is famous for Altbier, a top-fermented beer brewed by no fewer than eight Düsseldorf bars, right on the premises. Here are some of our favorite experiences when cruising to Düsseldorf, Germany:

  • The Rhine embankment promenade or Rheinuferpromenade links Altstadt (Old Town) to the more modern MedienHafen. Burgplatz is the place to start, and along the way you'll find numerous cafés, bars, and plenty of benches to people-watch or see the big ships chugging through the river.

  • The tree-lined canal along Königsallee (or just Kö to the locals) is a popular spot in the city, both as a peaceful, green place for a rest or a picnic and as a gateway to high-end shopping. Foodies will also appreciate the multitude of gourmet restaurants from which to choose.

  • The Rheinturm (Rhine Tower) rises almost 800 feet above the city, right next to the river and the Media Harbor. It provides a 360-degree view inside its restaurant; if you don't want an entire meal (which can be pricey here), you can have cake and a coffee and still enjoy the benefits.

  • After the tower, visit MedienHafen (Media Harbor) in the "new" section of Düsseldorf. Although there are many modern amenities here, such as restaurants, discotheques, and hotels, historic buildings are incorporated among the more modern architecture (with some of the more fascinating constructions designed by such notables as by Frank Gehry).
