ROTHESAY, ISLE OF BU, Scotland Cruise Port

As an island located in Scotland’s Firth of Clyde, the Isle of Bute is divided into highland and lowland areas beside the Highland Boundary Fault. It’s the second largest island in Scotland’s fifth largest group of islands and has a population of around 7,000. Two ferries connect the island to the Scottish mainland. One travels between Rothesay and Wemyss Bay and the other goes between Rhubodach and Colintraive. Rothesay is the principal town on the island and features one of the finest examples of Victorian culture in the center of town. Rothesay Castle dates back to the 13^th century and although it’s partially in ruin, it remains picturesque and historically significant. Bute’s sailing center is comprised of two boatyards and a marina, plus a club that organizes private moorings since the waters of Kames Bay are protected. Tourists are also drawn to a number of old-fashioned churches and various museums and libraries.

• Take in the beauty and rich history during a visit to Mount Stuart House. Bask in the stunning architecture as well as the historic collections which includes the authentication of a previously uncatalogued copy of Shakespeare’s First Folio.
   
• Slightly off the beaten path, but well worth the trip, are the ruins of St. Blane’s Chapel. The remaining stonework and countryside views are stunning and worthwhile.
   
• Check out a different side of the Victorian era at the Rothesay’s Victorian Toilets. Clean and pristine, a quick look at this ancient restoration is worth the tiny entrance fee.
   
• No visit would be complete without a stop at Rothesay Castle. This ancient site is well preserved, and the epitome of all things Victorian. Strong and moated to defend against invaders, the beauty of the era still shines through.
