Port Elizabeth, Saint Vincent Cruise Port

When sailing the Caribbean Sea, you may come across the Grenadines island chain and the lovely island of Bequia, which is part of the country of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. Cruise along to Admiralty Bay and Port Elizabeth, Saint Vincent for a tropical adventure that's more on the slow-paced end. While the entire island is all of seven square miles, it was once given the dreamy nickname "Island in the Clouds" (or Becouya) by the native Caribs. Resistance to French and other Europeans colonizing the island was fierce, but the 1700s found these settlers in control as they set up sugar plantations. While the sugar trade eventually died out, marine industries such as whaling blossomed. While whaling is no longer practiced with any frequency, there's enough seafood to delight tourists. Here are some of our favorite experiences for the cruise port of Port Elizabeth, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines:

  • Princess Margaret Beach is one of the best stretches of sand on the island for swimming and water sports. It takes about 30 minutes to walk there from the Belmont Walkway, or take a water or regular taxi. For more seclusion, Hope Bay on the eastern coast is extremely quiet (and doesn't have facilities, so bring refreshments).

  • Built in the 1700s, Hamilton Fort has more of a view than leftovers from its time guarding the bay from the French and American privateers. The cannons (and informative sign) may interest history buffs, and the gorgeous scenery will interest everyone.

  • Nature lovers will adore the Old Hegg Turtle Sanctuary in nearby Park Bay. Its founder, Orton King, is dedicated to saving hawksbill turtles from extinction. He collects newly-hatched turtles and releases them back into the wild after three years. “Brother” King provides a labor of love, and the baby turtles are heart-meltingly adorable.

  • For souvenir shopping or dining on authentic Caribbean cuisine, go right down to Admiralty Bay (which is also a good place to relax and watch the yachts sail in and out). Don't miss the open-air market and model boat shops for unique gifts you just might want to keep.
