Nanortalik, Greenland Cruise Port

If you’ve dreamed of visiting a place whose name translates to "Place of Polar Bears," then the cruise port of Nanortalik, Greenland should top your bucket list. Located in southern Greenland's Nanortalik Island, the town was one of the last parts of Greenland settled by the Inuit and the first to be settled by the Norse. Near the shores of the Labrador Sea, there are multiple small settlements nearby, most with no more than around 20 people (Nanortalik is the "big" town in the area, with around 1,300 residents). One of the most popular places for mountain climbing in the world, some of the peaks have been compared to those of the Alps for the challenges they pose. Although the town's inhabitants rely on fishing as a source of food, tourism is what primarily drives the economy. To learn about the town's colonial past, visit the open air Nanortalik Museum. Situated in the old port area, you can see well-preserved houses, huts, boats, and other items that showcase Nanortalik's past.
While the mountain and fjord climbing is left to the professionals because of the difficulty factor, kayakers can get an incredible view of the Tasermiut Fjord. Measuring around 43 miles long, Tasermiut is used as a starting point for thrill-seekers looking for more challenging treks.
The old wooden Danish Nanortalik Church has enjoyed protected status since 2004 for its cultural significance. Built in 1916, it's the town's only church and can be found in the old colonial quarter. The Knud Rasmussen Stone, a landmark boulder, sits next to the church.
With a plethora of marine life here, take a tour by kayak or by guide to catch sight of the seals (which are what bring the polar bears close), as well as humpback and fin whales.
