Lofoten, Norway Cruise Port

If you're interested in an Arctic Circle experience at slightly warmer temperatures, then a visit to the cruise port of Lofoten, Norway may be on the agenda. Located in the country's Nordland county, the archipelago is surrounded by the Norwegian Sea and is characterized by its unspoiled land, rugged fjords, and fabulous mountain peaks. In fact, if dramatic scenery is what you're after, you'll find Lofoten a photographer’s dream come true. With settlements going back at least 11,000 years, fishing began to drive the economy more than 1,000 years ago, and it's remained an important fishing center (noted for the sheer amount of cod caught here). Despite cooler temperatures, you'll still find all kinds of water sports – including surfing. Artists and writers have been inspired by the beauty of Lofoten, among them Edgar Allan Poe and Jules Verne. Here are some of our favorite experiences when cruising to Lofoten, Norway:

  • It may look like the Caribbean, but if you visit the lovely Utakleiv Beach (considered one of the most romantic in Europe), dipping your toes into the ocean will dispel that notion! Regardless, it's a great place to experience the midnight sun, as well as hiking, camping, or just enjoying the sunset.

  • The popular Lofotr Vikingmuseum in Borg is designed to resemble a Viking chieftain's village and longhouse, fashioned from the ruins that were uncovered here in the early 1980s. You'll get a total immersion into life in Scandinavia around 500 A.D., thanks to costumed guides and onsite artisans.

  • If you're lucky enough to be around for the Northern Lights or Aurora Borealis, it will be a sight you'll not soon forget. They can be seen on clear nights from September to April; Lofoten is beneath the Auroral Oval, which increases your chances of seeing this colorful display. Visit the Polarlight Centre Lofoten in Laukvik for a one-hour presentation if you won't be around after dark.

  • Mountain climbers can tackle the Svolværgeita, which is not terribly high. There is, however, a leap between two fingers of rock at the top – for that, you'll need to take along a climbing guide.
