Tortola, B.V.I. Cruise Port

Tortola is the largest of the British Virgin Islands and also where you’ll find that group of islands’ economic and political center. This idyllic island offers cruisers a bit of history mixed with amazing beaches and stunning scenery. The history of the island is a bit convoluted; many believe Christopher Columbus named it for the turtledoves that lived there back in the 1490s. However, many also say the Dutch gave it the name “Ter Tholen” and the British altered the name to Tortola. No matter the origin of the name, you can believe that Tortola is an island with a lot to offer. Some of the island’s best offerings are outlined below:

  • Taste some of the Caribbean’s most prized product, rum, at the Callwood Rum Distillery where the Callwood family has been producing rum for 300 years.
  • Spend an afternoon hiking and walking through Sage Mountain National Park. This 92-acre spot has seven trails and lots of beautiful greenery.

  • Ride on top of a dolphin’s belly at the Tortola Dolphin Swim Adventure. This experience allows you to meet, touch and spend time with a dolphin, one of the sea’s friendliest creatures.
  • Learn about the Colonial era in Tortola with a visit to the Government House, which was the home of the British Virgin Islands’ governor. Inside you’ll find artifacts from that period of time.
