Marthas Vineyard, Massachusetts Cruise Port

Anyone who loves old-world charm will find cruising to the port of Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts an absolute delight. Located on the United States’ east coast, this popular island vacation spot can be found just south of Cape Cod in the Atlantic Ocean. All of 100 square miles, many locals and returning visitors simply call it "The Vineyard," which can only be reached by boat or air – there's no tunnel or bridge connecting it to the mainland. The island was originally called Noepe, or "land amid the streams" by its original settlers, the Native American tribe called the Wampanoag. English explorer Bartholomew Gosnold gave it the name Martha's Vineyard in the early 1600s; whether named for his mother-in-law or his daughter is up for discussion, but it’s safe to assume it pleased his wife regardless. Here are a handful of our favorite experiences for the cruise port of Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts:

  • One of the most popular destinations on the island is Edgartown Lighthouse, both picturesque and easy to reach. With renovations completed in 2007, the interior is now open to visitors. The tour guides are knowledgeable and friendly, and the view from both the top and bottom is excellent.

  • The three mile-long Katama Beach (also called South Beach) is a favorite beach which is open to the public. Noted for its fine surf on one side and protected salt pond on the other, it tends to be less busy than some of the other beaches, probably because there's a bit of a hike to reach it if you've arrived by car.

  • The small town of Aquinnah is home to the beautiful clay Aquinnah Cliffs. The rainbow-colored cliffs and nearby beach are great for a nature walk, and the town itself is a center of Wampanoag culture.

  • If you want to be part of the action, hang around Circuit Avenue in Oak Bluffs. Along with shopping, dining, and people watching, it's a short walk to the pier and ferry. And if you're into ice cream, you'll have no shortage of places to get cool, sweet treats under the summer sun.
