Corner Brook, Newfoundland Cruise Port

Cruising to the Canadian city of Corner Brook, Newfoundland means exploring a bit of history; located on the Bay of Islands at the mouth of the Humber River in the western part of the province, the area was once a thriving center of fishing and logging, and was surveyed by Captain James Cook in 1767 (although the Vikings beat him here). As a monument to his contributions, the Captain James Cook Historic Site overlooks the city from Crow Hill, an 857 foot high mountain peak. Here you'll find copies of the charts mapped by Captain Cook along with a beautiful view of the Bay of Islands. With residents enjoying everything thing from hockey to bragging about their 40 pound salmon catch to a bustling arts scene, this is a city with much to explore. Here are some of our favorite experiences while visiting the cruise port of Corner Brook, Newfoundland:

  • One of the area's hidden gems, exploring the Corner Brook Caves is a thrill in both warm and cold weather. You can check them out on your own, although many cruise lines offer shore excursions if you prefer a guide.

  • Visitors looking to explore the area's cultural scene can visit the Grenfell Art Gallery located on the Grenfell Campus, part of the Memorial University of Newfoundland. Promoting the arts both on campus and within the community, you can view the gallery's permanent collection which features many Canadian visual artists.

  • Inside the Humbermouth Station, the Railway Society of Newfoundland offers train enthusiasts a chance to explore many historic items, including a steam locomotive, diesel electric locomotive, and narrow-gauge rolling stock that provided transport across the province from 1921 to 1939.

  • Shoppers looking for the usual retail experience can find it here, but if you want something unique, there are plenty of specialty and gift shops in the downtown area, mostly around West Street and Broadway. Here the friendly merchants will help you find local treasures as a memento of your cruise..
