• Visitors should check out the city's main attraction, the Kumamoto Castle. The castle was built between the years 1601 – 1607 by Kato Kiyomasa and is regarded to be the third largest castle in Japan. Additionally, the Kumamoto castle was well known for its unique defensive structure.
   
• Nature lovers should not miss the opportunity to visit the Suizenji Garden, a beautiful garden and tea arbor that was built for 80 years by three successive feudal lords. At the center of the garden is a pond that gets fed through underground streams.
   
• Fans of architecture and history should pay a visit to the Hosokawa Gyobu-tei, also known as the former Hosokawa mansion. It has 24 rooms that are open to the public, allowing one to catch a glimpse some of the Edo Period furniture, fashion, and lifestyle.
   
• Adventurers and nature lovers alike should pay a visit to Mount Aso. It is Japan's largest active caldera and it consists of five major peaks. The mountain has some trails that allow for exploration on foot with the highlight being the spectacular views from the mountain's edge.
