Tolanaro, sometimes referred to by its former designation, Fort Dauphin, is a port city along the Indian Ocean located on the southeastern coast of Madagascar. The town has a population of roughly 46,000 and is the capital of the Tolanaro district and the Anosy region. It is also Madagascar’s oldest town. The port retains the Fort Dauphin name and has been open for business and vital for trade and commerce since the early 15th century when it became the country’s first French settlement. Most cruise ships, barring a few smaller vessels, anchor away from the island as smaller ships tender the passengers ashore where they can make the short walk into town. Because of the steep, green mountains that surround the town, Tolanaro boasts a drier climate than most of Madagascar and has far less rainfall. Tourists love the many beaches on the outskirts of town for their fine sand and turquoise waters made perfect for swimming or snorkeling.
