Safi, Morocco Cruise Port

Cruising through the North Atlantic Ocean toward northwest Africa, you'll find the port city of Safi, Morocco. With its population of nearly 300,000 residents, it's the capital of Safi Province and the main fishing port for Morocco's sardine industry. Although the date when it was founded is unknown, Safi is considered one of the oldest cities in the country. As far back as the 1100s, it served as an important port to the capital of Marrakesh. The Portuguese eventually played a major role in developing the area, and their archaeological influence is still in existence today, as seen in the fortress they built to protect the city. Today, tourists also come for the fresh seafood, ocean views, and pottery. Safi is known as the "Pottery capital of Morocco." The Colline des Potiers (Potters' Hill) is a fantastic place to take in multiple potters at work, largely using earthen kilns and traditional skills. Make sure to tip any of the masters that invite you to watch them work; considering that many pieces can be obtained at a relatively low cost, it's still a bargain.
The 16th-century Portuguese Kechla Citadel has both historic and artistic significance, thanks to the fascinating designs built into its walls. Take in the view of the ocean from the roof, and then visit the National Ceramics Museum that's housed within its walls.
Another popular fortress in the city (and perhaps its most photographed site) is Dar el-Bahar, which means "Castle at the Sea." Another 16th-century construction, it also provides excellent views from either a top or an underground tunnel that leads right to the water.
Take a break from sightseeing at Souiria Beach, noted for being both picturesque and relatively quiet. South of the city, it's a large stretch of sand where you can swim or enjoy other water sports, then get a bite at a number of area restaurants.
