Puerto del Rosario, Spain Cruise Port

Puerto del Rosario is the capital of the Spanish island of Fuerteventura. It was once known as the “Port of Goats” because of its low visitor and industrial traffic, in which they primarily only exported actual goats. Over the years, the humble fishing town’s shipping business steadily increased and it continues to develop to this day. The town center surrounds the port in the shape of a crescent, so areas of interest like restaurants, shops and cafes are all within walking distance. The current population is around 37,000, many of which live in or around the bustling town center. Because it’s located in the Las Palmas province of the Canary Islands, Puerto del Rosario is a prime destination for cruisers during the spring and summer seasons. The most popular places to visit are Betancuria, a small town on the western coast, and Playa Blanca, or the White Beach, which is located just south of the city.

• Playa Blanca is a long and sandy beach. The quiet and serene atmosphere is ideal for strolls any time of the day, or for taking a relaxing swim.
   
• Ecomuseo La Alcogida is an earnest reconstruction of a traditional rural village from the early 19^th century. It offers a rare look into island living during the old “Port of Goats” days.
   
• The Ermita San Pedro de Alcantara is a very well preserved building that too has roots to the early 19^th century. The church is delightfully old fashioned and interesting to explore.
   
• Playa Chica is a much busier, yet smaller beach with incredible views of the town, as well as the rock formations and cliffs that surround it.
