Maniitsoq, Greenland Cruise Port

Cruising through the North Atlantic Ocean may bring you to the western port of Maniitsoq, Greenland, formerly known as Sukkertoppen. Even though it has fewer than 3,000 residents, it's still Greenland's sixth-largest town. With archaeological evidence showing that the area has been inhabited for at least 4,000 years, it was used as a trading post by Danish colonists (who relocated from the original Sukkertoppen and called this settlement New or Nye-Sukkertoppen) in the late 1700s. It eventually became an important area of trade for reindeer hides; today, plans are in the works to increase industry with an aluminum smelting plant. As expected from a place where nature is in charge, there are plenty of outdoor things to do. Because Maniitsoq is on an archipelago and surrounded by canals, you may hear it called the “Venice of Greenland.” Here some of our favorite experiences for the cruise port of Maniitsoq, Greenland:

  • Made up of four colonial buildings, the Maniitsoq Museum gives a look at area history with a cooper’s workshop, bakery, brewery, and other areas of commerce. There are also costumes and art on display, which provide a look into the town's part.

  • If it's the Arctic, there must be fjords. The Eternity Fjord or Evighedsfjorden can be climbed or viewed by boat; regardless of the approach, the views are magnificent (although better from the top).

  • Anglers find fishing for Arctic char at a premium in Maniitsoq, with multiple spots from which to choose. Whether you hire a guide or go it alone, it's a stimulating encounter for any fishing enthusiast, thanks to the sheer size of the catch and the scenic backdrop.

  • With the area a playground for humpback whales, whale watching (and dolphin watching) tours are extremely popular here. Since whales love to swim around the fjords, it's little wonder that searching for whales is usually met with success. Some whales, such as the bowhead whale, stick around all year long.
