Fulaga (Vulaga), Lau Group, Fiji Cruise Port

Fulaga (also spelled Vulaga) is a crescent-shaped reef-limestone island in Fiji's Southern Lau Group, located at the southern end of the archipelago. It is renowned for its spectacular lagoon, which is home to many islets and rocks, and for its national significance as a habitat of the Pritchardia thurstonii palm. The island has three villages, Muanaicake, Muanaira and Naividamu, with a total population of less than 400 people. The villagers are traditional carvers and weavers, skilled in making outrigger canoes, wooden bowls and magi magi rope from local materials. Visitors to Fulaga need to ask permission from the acting chief of the island and present a gift of kava root as part of the sevusevu ceremony. They are then hosted by a local family who welcomes them into their homes and culture. Fulaga is a remote and beautiful island that offers a glimpse into the authentic Fijian way of life.
