Overview
Set on the western shore of Lake Michigan, Milwaukee often flies under the radar. This lakeside city blends industrial charm with creative spirit. Downtown Milwaukee is easy to explore, with its scenic RiverWalk, historic architecture, and standout spots like the Milwaukee Art Museum—famous for its striking “wings” that open and close like a giant sail. From waterfront parks to revitalized warehouses, the city offers a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere.
Milwaukee’s beer heritage runs deep, and you can still tour iconic breweries like Miller alongside newer craft taprooms in every neighborhood. The Historic Third Ward is a popular stop, filled with boutiques, public market vendors, and stylish cafés. Come summer, the city truly comes alive with festivals, concerts, and a love for outdoor patios and lake views.
It’s also a place where community pride shines—whether through local sports, farm-to-table eats, or neighborhood events. Milwaukee may fly under the radar, but it delivers plenty of surprises for those who take the time to look around.

See the stunning Milwaukee City Hall, a magnificent example of German Renaissance Revival architecture completed in 1895. Its iconic clock tower was once the second-tallest building in the United States.
Tip: The exterior is spectacular. Look for the ornate stonework and the statue of Commerce above the main entrance.

See a unique architectural and botanical landmark at The Domes. These three massive, conoidal glass domes house diverse climates: tropical, arid, and a constantly changing display dome.
Tip: The Arid Dome features plants from the desert, while the Tropical Dome showcases lush rainforest foliage. They offer a unique photo opportunity, especially during winter months.

Spend some time at Discovery World, a science and technology center located on the lakefront. The center features interactive exhibits, an aquarium, and a variety of hands-on activities that are fun for all ages. Highlights include the Reiman Aquarium and the Great Lakes Future exhibit.
Tip: Allocate at least an hour to explore Discovery World. The center is a great place for families and offers plenty of activities for kids.

Take a leisurely stroll through the Historic Third Ward, a trendy neighborhood known for its art galleries, boutique shops, and vibrant dining scene. The area is also home to the Milwaukee Public Market, where you can sample local foods and shop for unique gifts.
Tip: Spend some time exploring the shops and galleries. The Third Ward is a great place to grab lunch or a coffee.

Visit the magnificent Basilica of St. Josaphat, a grand Polish cathedral known for its Romanesque Revival architecture and immense copper dome. The structure was constructed using salvaged materials from a demolished Chicago Federal Building.
Tip: The interior is breathtakingly ornate. Be sure to check the cathedral's visiting hours, as they often differ from service times.

End your day with a relaxing walk along the Milwaukee RiverWalk, a scenic pedestrian pathway that runs along the Milwaukee River. The RiverWalk is lined with public art, restaurants, and breweries, making it a great place to unwind and enjoy the city’s waterfront.
Tip: Visit in the late afternoon to enjoy the sunset over the river. The RiverWalk is also a great spot for people-watching and taking in the city’s atmosphere.
