Rio Grande, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil Cruise Port

Appropriately enough, the state and cruise port of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil translates to "Great Southern River." Within Brazil's southern region, Roi Grande do Sul is just below the state of Santa Catarina, with Uruguay to its south, and the Atlantic Ocean to the east. Originally settled by the Guaraní, Spanish Jesuits eventually colonized the area, with large groups of Germans and Italians arriving in the late 1800s. The state has a vibrant Gaúcho culture (somewhat like a North American cowboy, although with many variations); add the influence of the other ethnicities living here, and it's easy to see why Rio Grande do Sul is considered one of the most culturally rich states in Brazil. Ecotourism is hugely popular here, so if you like to travel green, this may be the place for you. Here are some of our favorite experiences when cruising to Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil:

  • The PUCRS Science and Technology Museum in the city of Porto Alegre is considered one of the best interactive museums of natural science in the world. Not just for kids, the approximately 700 experiments are designed to get you thinking and actively participating, as well as discovering things you may never have known about the world in which you live.

  • Not far from Porto Alegre is the Guaíba River (also referred to as a bay, lake, or lagoon), famous for its spectacular sunsets. There is plenty of nature to take in, including the large Marinha do Brasil Park with walking paths and places to relax.

  • Moinhos de Vento Park ("Windmills Park") is also known as Parcão; it’s located in Porto Alegre, and one of the greenest spots of the city. A lovely place to take a break from the hustle and bustle, it’s especially fun for the kids. There are also numerous restaurants nearby when it's time for a bite.

  • Erected in 1958, the Estátua do Laçador (Laçador Statue) shows the traditionally-dressed gaúcho and is one of the symbols of the area. He's standing near a pretty little area where you can watch the world go by.
