Mayotte, France Cruise Port

Mayotte is a region of France, despite its archipelago being located off the African coast between northwestern Madagascar and northeastern Mozambique. It consists of a main island, Grande-Terre, a smaller island, Petite-Terre, and several inlets strewn around the two. The city of Mamoudzou, located on the large island, has been Mayotte’s capital since 1977 and has a population of over 12,000 divided into six satellite villages and three cantons. A ferry makes runs between the large and small island between the Mamoudzou and Pamandzi ports. The outskirts of Mamoudzou have many hiking trails, including the path up to Mont Choungui, which offers the most impressive view of the island. Surrounded by a tropical coral reef, it is enclosed by some of the world’s largest and deepest lagoons. These near-bottomless drops are a big draw to divers who enjoy the thrill of the plunge. In August and September, humpback whales with calves can also be spotted around the lagoons.
