Korsakov, Sakhalin, Russia Cruise Port

Within Russia's borders, you'll find the Sakhalin Oblast, a federal subject of Russia containing the island of Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands. Sakhalin's administrative center is the cruise port of Korsakov, Russia, which is on the coast of the charmingly named Salmon Cove within the Aniva Bay. Known mostly as a fishing village, Korsakov's history is otherwise a bit fuzzy; it may have existed as a trading port in 1790, and got its current name in 1869, in honor of then-Governor General Mikhail Korsakov. After years of territorial disputes and Japan claiming rights to the town, Korsakov was actually handed to the Japanese after World War I, but returned to Soviet rule after World War II. Not just a summer hangout, Lake Busse is also reportedly a great place for winter fishing. It's a relaxing place to swim or snorkel, and there are fresh urchins, oysters, and water chestnuts for purchase if hungry.
A small and quaint place to get some Korsakov flavor is the Museum of History and Local Lore. After you examine the artefacts, catch a traditional dance and take some photos of the performers wearing traditional dress.
A lovely, art-filled structure at the top of a hill, a walk to the Friary of Protection of the Holy Virgin is in order. The most eastern of the Russian monasteries, it includes a cemetery with graves of Russian sailors who perished in 1904 during the Russo-Japanese War.
To see one of the biggest attractions in town, visit Lenin Square, a pretty, partially tree-lined space, and the Lenin Statue. Along with the large statue, there's also a war memorial honoring Russian soldiers, along with a fountain in the center of the square and benches to have a rest and people-watch.
