Dakhla, Western Sahara Cruise Port

Built on a narrow peninsula of the Atlantic Coast, the North African cruise port of Dakhla, Western Sahara was originally was inhabited by Berbers during ancient times, expanded by the Spanish, and is currently under Moroccan control. Thanks to its location, fishing and oyster farming are the foundation of the area's economy, along with tourism; aquatic sports, such as kitesurfing and windsurfing have become extremely popular here. With a mild, dry climate all year long and proximity to the Sahara Desert, plant life is limited. What the land doesn't have, the ocean does: there is a rich source of fish here, along with a large biodiversity of bird species. Along with water sports and many type of animals, there are also religious and historical buildings throughout the town, including mosques and an old Spanish lighthouse. Listed below are a handful of our favorite experiences when cruising to Dakhla, Western Sahara:

  • With plenty of quiet beaches here, you might also spot dolphins and sea turtles while taking a stroll. Foum el Bouir is considered the surfers’ beach and close to the city; or check out la Pointe du dragon, a site known by athletes for its water sports center. For sunbathing on white sand, you can't beat Puertito Beach.

  • While a good photo opportunity from the outside, the Assona Mosque is not accessible to non-Muslims. It's still worth a picture or two, thanks to its picture-postcard facade flanked by palm trees.

  • If you feel like climbing 240 steps, you can visit an old Spanish lighthouse, which you can see from most places within Dakhla. Here you'll find great views of about half of the peninsula of Dakhla and the entire city.

  • For people watching, go to the inland shores area. Here you'll see the locals, mostly fishermen, with their colorful boats as they bustle in and out of the ocean with the day's catch. Head closer to the cliffs near the Atlantic to watch nature in all its majesty; while not an area for swimming, it's a great place to relax.
