Arnhem, The Netherlands Cruise Port

While thoughts of Holland might evoke images of tulips and windmills, cruising to the port of Arnhem in The Netherlands also creates possibilities for shopping and sightseeing. One of the larger cities in the Netherlands, Arnhem is situated in the east and is the capital of the province of Gelderland. Because it’s located on the river Nederrijn as well as on the Sint-Jansbeek stream, it's easy to find cruise lines offering shore excursions to Arnhem. If you travel north a bit, you can enjoy strolling through lush forests, romping among the sand dunes, or visiting the Kröller-Müller Museum and the St. Hubertus Hunting Lodge – all located within the Hoge Veluwe National Park. With a relatively mild climate all year long and a city of about 151,000 residents, here are some of our favorite experiences for the cruise port of Arnhem, The Netherlands:

  • Those who love shopping will be in heaven, thanks to four connected streets that offer plenty of boutiques: the Roggestraat, Ketelstraat, Vijzelstraat, and Rijnstraat. When it’s time for a break, stop at a café for a slice of Dutch apple pie or poffertjes, a traditional Dutch snack (like a small, thick, sweet pancake).

  • The Royal Burgers' Zoo is one of the biggest in the country and receives about 1.5 million visitors each year. Broken down into eight different theme areas, Burgers' Zoo is also attempting to preserve animals that have been deemed nearly extinct, thanks to its conservation and captive breeding facilities.

  • Museum and history buffs can enjoy the award-winning Netherlands Open Air Museum, or Openluchtmuseum. A national museum that focuses on the culture of its citizens, it features those famous windmills, along with antique houses, farms, and factories from different parts of the Netherlands. The museum also includes a nearby park.

  • For Gothic style, visit St. Eusebius’ Church - also called "The Big Church" - of Arnhem. Fans of architecture will appreciate its restoration to its former glory after being heavily damaged in World War II. Begun in 1450 and taking nearly a century to finish, the church has a famous carillon, with one of the heaviest bells in Holland.
