Enkhuizen, The Netherlands Cruise Port

Within the province of North Holland in the Netherlands is the charming cruise port of Enkhuizen. During the Golden Age of Sail (around the middle of the 17th century), this was one of the harbors of the Dutch East India Company which conducted trade with the East Indies, making it a city of power and importance. Eventually, Amsterdam took over as more powerful, mostly because the erosion of Enkhuizen's harbor. This hasn’t affected modern-day Enkhuizen and its ability to attract boat traffic, as it still has one of the largest marinas in all of the Netherlands, with IJsselmeer Lake possessing a fleet of large recreational vessels. The Zuiderzeemuseum is devoted to preserving the area’s cultural heritage and maritime history. Separated into two parts, the indoor Binnenmuseum focuses on farming, fishing, and shipping while the open-air Buitenmuseum shows off more than 130 relocated and rebuilt workshops and homes. Designed to be an authentic experience, inhabitants wear traditional dress and run demonstrations to show life as it was between 1880 and 1932.
To explore an authentic Gothic church, visit Westerkerk. Hailing from the 15th century, the Dutch Protestant church includes a removable wooden belfry and ornate choir screen. Famous Dutch Rembrandt van Rijn is actually buried under a tombstone here, although the exact location is unknown.
A historic gate, former prison, and defense tower, Drommedaris is located between the Buitenhaven and the Oude Haven. It's currently used as a meeting hall and as a cultural center; keep your ears open to hear the clock tower's carillon chime at the top of each hour.
