Scoresby Sund, Greenland Cruise Port

Located in the Greenland Sea is the large fjord system and cruise port of Scoresby Sound (also called Scoresbysund or Scoresby Sund). You'll find it on Greenland's eastern coast, forming a tree-like structure that branches into more fjords and is surrounded by mountains. The northern side of the Sound is where you'll find Ittoqqortoormiit, the area's only permanent settlement, where just under 500 residents call home. The Sound itself is named for English explorer and scientist William Scoresby, who mapped the area in 1822. There are several islands within Scoresby Sound; the largest is Milne Land, along with Storo, Sorte Island, Rode Island, Denmark Island, and the Bjorne Islands. Although the climate here is Arctic, there is an abundance of fauna and birds, including the Arctic fox, stoat, barnacle goose, little auk, and many more. Listed below are a handful of our favorite experiences when cruising to Scoresby Sound, Greenland:

  • Of course, the best way to explore Scoresby Sound is by water. As you drift between through the Arctic waters among the icebergs, keep an eye out for calving from the parent glaciers. Take in the incredible gorges and their sheer cliffs, which may drop to depths of nearly 10,000 feet.

  • A visit to the Ittoqqortoormiit village is a fascinating look at how this small group of humans lives among all the ice. Many of the residents are hunters, which is important in keeping the settlement intact (and the plethora of animals and fish make this possible). Tourism is starting to grow here, with seasonal cottages popping up here and there.

  • Check out the Intuit Ittoqqortoormiit Church while you're in the village. While the exterior looks like an ordinary wooden church, the inside looks like an upside-down ship's hull.

  • During the summer months, you can take a kayak across the strait from Ittoqqortoormiit to the uninhabited settlements of Cape Hope and Cape Tobin. Cape Tobin has the added attraction of a hot spring; because of this, its Greenlandic name is Uunartoq, which means “That which one burns oneself on.”
