Rethymno, Greece Cruise Port

As the capital of the Rethymno regional unit, this city of approximately 40,000 people is located on the island of Crete. Founded during the Minoan civilization, Rethymno was born and bred as a wealthy paradise which had so much influence it printed its own money. One such coin, depicting two dolphins circling one another, was used as the logo for the city’s flag and crest. The buildings maintain an aristocratic appearance dating back to Venetian rule in the 16^th century. Their prominent features include arched doorways, stone staircases, and aesthetically pleasing stone balconies. In the heart of town, shopping, restaurants, and cafes are in abundance, with shops running up and down the narrow streets for miles. A gigantic Venetian fortress can be viewed from the harbor which becomes more fantastic the closer you get. Rethymno is also known for its many beaches, perfect for swimming or just walking through the sand.

• Visit the Monastery of Arkadi and view a Venetian church that was the site of tragedy during the Turkish invasion. Despite the conflict, the church remains standing so many years later.
• Experience the entirety of Venetian influence at Rethymnon Old Town. The lovely views of classical architecture are balanced with modern amenities at various shops.
• Break away to the more naturalistic side of Rethymno by visiting Kotsifou Canyon. An impressive valley with short rounded cliffs, nature compounds all sides of this walking path, particularly with beautiful flowers and trees.
• See the blend of past and present at the Holy Monastery of Preveli. The more modern structure is itself impressive and contains a collection of historic icons, and the ruins out front paint a fine picture of the church that once was.
