Isla Isabela (Caleta Tagus), Galapagos Islands Cruise Port

Isla Isabela, also known as Isabela Island, is regarded as being the largest island of the Galapagos archipelago, Ecuador. The island covers an approximate area of about 4,640 square kilometers, making it almost four times larger than the second largest island of the archipelago, Santa Cruz, and also larger than all of the other Galapagos islands combined. This Pacific Ocean island was originally named Albermale by Ambrose Cowley, in 1684, in honor of the Duke of Albermale. It was, however, changed to Isabela in honor of the Queen of Spain. The island holds an estimated population of about 1,748 people and reaches an altitude of about 1,707 meters. Featured below are some of the recommended experiences and activities that visitors can enjoy after cruising to Isla Isabela (Caleta Tagus), Galapagos Islands:

  • Visitors interested in geographic features and volcanoes should take the time to visit the Sierra Negra Volcano. It is one of the five volcanoes found on the island and boasts of having the second largest caldera in the world, which is best explored on a hike.

  • Birdwatchers and photographers should visit the Tagus Cove found on the Northwestern side of the island. The cove provided shelter for pirates and whalers, but it is now an excellent spot for viewing land birds, penguins, land iguanas, and giant tortoises. The cove can also be viewed from a dinghy.

  • Adventurers visiting the island should try going to the Wall of Tears. Hiking to this historical site takes visitors through the island, highlighting the flora and fauna found in the region. The Wall of Tears was a feature built by prisoners on the island to keep them busy.

  • Visitors interested in learning more about the island's giant tortoises should visit the Tortoise Centre of Isabela. The center was constructed in 1994 and hosts tortoise species found in the Southern parts of the island where they breed. At the center, visitors can see the old tortoises and young hatchlings.
