Isla Santiago (Puerto Egas), Galapagos Islands Cruise Port

Isla Santiago, or the Santiago Island, is part of the Galapagos archipelago in the Caribbean Sea. The island was originally called James Island, in honor of England's King James II. It is also known as San Salvador, after the first island discovered by Christopher Columbus on his voyage of the Americas. Santiago also boasts of being the second of the Galapagos Islands to be visited by Charles Darwin. The island consists of two overlapping volcanoes and covers an approximate area of 585 square kilometers, and reaches an altitude of about 907 meters which is the height of the shield volcano in the Northwestern side of the island. Listed below are some of the recommended experiences and activities that visitors can enjoy after cruising to Isla Santiago (Puerto Egas), Galapagos Islands:

  • Those interested in geology and volcanology should pay a visit to Sullivan Bay. This visitor site, allows for visitors to walk across very recent lava flow that was formed in the late 19th century, while viewing the feature's structural and aesthetic properties.

  • Santiago is rich with dive sites and visitors should especially consider going to Cousins Rock that is slightly off the island's East Coast. The dive site provides viewing opportunities of sea lions, sea turtles, fur seals, sharks, rays, and wonderful underwater geologic formations.

  • Visitors should also take the time to visit a hiking trail in Sombrero Chino, also known as Chinaman's Hat. It is an islet that is slightly off the Southeastern Coast of Santiago, and consists of volcanic cone that is 52 meters in height.
