Grein, Austria Cruise Port

While its coat of arms might make you think of Noah's Ark, the cruise port of Grein, Austria is situated on the Danube River and is full of old-world European charm. Located in upper Austria, Grein received town rights in August 1491. That coat of arms – which has three men perched on a house-shaped boat while surrounded by rocks – represents the dangers of shipping (then the town's biggest industry) on the Danube. Today, Grein is full of history, set against a backdrop of beautiful mountains and landscapes. The locals feel that the town embraces the Biedermeier spirit, a style that grew from the trends popular in Central Europe between 1815 and 1848. Schloss Greinburg (Greinburg Castle) is possibly Grein's most popular attraction and one of the first castles in this region. Built between 1488 and 1493, the castle is still inhabited (by Andreas, Prince of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha) but open for visitors to take a look.
Austria's oldest theater is located in Grein and still holds regular performances. The Historisches Stadttheater Grein was built in 1791 out of the town's former granary – and it's still in its original condition.
Close to the theater, another historic architectural landmark to visit is the Rathaus (Town Hall), built in 1563. After checking out the building, you can explore the Town Square and its shops, as well as stop for a bite to eat.
A view of St. Giles Church next to the Danube is about as picture postcard perfect as you can get. Also close to the theater and town hall, it looks fairly imposing in size next against the backdrop of the small, charming town.
