Vilshofen, Germany Cruise Port

The lovely cruise port of Vilshofen, Germany is surrounded by water: not only is it on the banks of the Danube River (the town's full German name is Vilshofen an der Donau), but three nearby creeks (called the Vils, the Pfudrach, and the Wolfach) feed into the river. Vilshofen is the largest town in the Passau district, and it's also at the southern edge of the Bavarian Forest. Its history goes back to at least the year 776, with 12th century documents showing its current name. With flooding from the river a constant problem, dams starting construction in 1957. A new bridge was finished in 2002, and Vilshofen became a popular port for cruise passengers. Today, the town not only exhibits old world charm, but is an excellent place for art, museum, and festival lovers. Listed below are a handful of our favorite experiences when cruising to Vilshofen, Germany:

  • If you're interested in history that might be outside the norm, visit the Schwarzafrika-Museum in the Abtei Schweiklberg. Here you'll find a large collection of artefacts, weapons, jewelry and more that arrived here via returning missionaries from eastern and southern Africa. The original 800 exhibits have grown since the museum's inception in 1990, thanks to benefactors and donations from private collections.

  • The church of St. John the Baptist looks over the town and is easily spotted from the river. While the exterior is fairly understated, the inside is decorated with all kinds of ornate golden decor.

  • Wildlife lovers can visit the Irgenöd Bird Park (about 10 minutes from town); here you'll find over 150 species of birds and animals. The park has plenty of benches to sit while you explore, along with a restaurant and children's playground.

  • The Hilgartsberg castle ruins look over the town; originally built in the 12th century, it began to deteriorate by the beginning of the 18th. While only the gates, dungeons, castle chapel and a few other areas remain intact, it's worth a look; if you're here during the winter holidays, one of the events hosted here is the luminous Hilgartsberg Castle Christmas Festival.
