Chalon-sur-Saone, France Cruise Port

Located along France’s Saone River, Chalon-sur-Saone is a quiet town that offers a look into small town life in the modern Burgundy region of France. Chalon-sur-Saone is probably most known for its connection to the foundation of photography. As a cruiser, you probably don’t go anywhere without a camera, and you have Chalon’s own Nicephore Niepce to thank. He is credited with creating Heliography to create the world’s oldest known photograph. He worked with Louis Daguerre. Chalon was also home to Dominique Vivant Denon, who was the first director of the Louvre in Paris. Explore even more of the Burgundy region’s history on a cruise to Chalon-sur-Saone. Featured below are a few of our favorite experiences for the cruise port of Chalon-sur-Saone, France:

  • Visit the Nicephore Niepce Museum to learn about the early days of photography and see some of the oldest photographs and photo taking equipment.
  • Taste the wines made in the surrounding area of Cote Chalonnaise, which produces pinot noir and chardonnay.
  • Sit down to a meal of Burgundy favorites like Boeuf Bourguignon or Coq au Vin.
  • In the summertime, the city hosts a four day festival called Chalon dans la Rue, which means “Chalon in the Street.” The festival welcomes artists, acrobats, singers and actors the world over to perform.
