Bocas Del Toro, Panama Cruise Port

If you ever wanted to stare into the "Mouth of the Bull," then cruising to the port of Bocas del Toro, Panama, will be let you experience a bull unlike any you've ever known. This northwestern archipelago consists of a mainland and nine smaller islands, visited by Christopher Columbus back in 1502. With lush, gorgeous vegetation and some species of fauna that can only be found here, it’s a favorite destination of eco-tourists and adventure lovers alike; for starters, check out the two national parks on the province called Isla Bastimentos National Marine Park and La Amistad International Park. Science fans might like the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute on Colón Island, just northwest of Bocas Town. Whether you’re into sailing, snorkeling, or shopping, this is a trip that is sure to please all five senses. Here are some of our favorite experiences for the cruise port of Bocas del Toro, Panama:

  • If you're looking for an offbeat excursion, visit La Gruta (The Cavern), whose entrance has a statue of the Virgin Mary keeping watch. Although it's not snorkeling, you'll still have to wade through water, while thousands of sleeping bats surround you. It's kind of like being in a real-life adventure movie.

  • This is a bird watcher's best-kept secret: although the jungles here are teeming with birds, it's not a well-developed activity here yet. If you're looking for land or sea birds, you'll find plenty of both, including the Red-billed Tropic Bird, brown pelican, doves, hummingbirds, and many others.

  • Although there are plenty of activities on Bocas del Toro, you won’t run into many museums or art galleries. Instead, the locals like to focus on the area’s culture. Many cruise lines offer shore excursions to indigenous villages that are scattered around the island so you can immerse yourself in their daily lives.

  • Lovers of marine life will delight in the marine turtles (including the hawksbill, the loggerhead, the leatherback, and the green turtle) that nest on the coasts of Bocas Del Toro. Migration takes place in July and August, and a guided tour will provide not only information, but extra care so that turtles are not disturbed.
