Ambon, Moluccas, Indonesia Cruise Port

Cruise to the port of Ambon, Indonesia in the Moluccas Islands (or more commonly, Maluku Islands), and you’ll see why it is sometimes called "Ambon Manise," which translates to "beautiful" or "pretty": noticeable upon arrival are the lush, green mountains and gorgeous tree-lined streets. As well as being the largest city on the Maluku Islands, Ambon is the center of tourism here. Colonized by the Portuguese in 1526, the Dutch took over within the next century and remained in power until Indonesia’s independence in 1945. Some of this influence remains, including that of religion; Ambon still has many residents who identify as Christian, although there is much ethnic diversity. If taking day trips to the surrounding islands, the Ambon city center is the place to stock up on supplies before heading out. Here are some of our favorite experiences for the cruise port of Ambon, Moluccas Islands, Indonesia:

  • If it’s paradise, there must be beaches. Fewer than five miles from the city is the tourist (and resident) favorite Natsepa Beach. The sparkling white sand and clear waters are custom-made for relaxation, while the more adventurous can enjoy snorkeling or rent a canoe. There’s also plenty of fresh fruit for sale nearby, so you don’t have to resort to unhealthy snacks.

  • With a varied religious population, one of the most striking attractions in town in the Al-Fatah Mosque (Masjid Raya Al Fatah Ambon). The distinctive gold, crisscrossed dome calls out to faithful from all over the island.

  • The World Peace Gong (or Gong Perdamaian Dunia) in Ambon is the 35th of its kind in the world and was erected to dispel the image of unrest that surrounded the city in the past. Festooned with around 200 flags from around the world, it’s a reminder that humans can coexist in harmony, even during troubled times.

  • The iconic, cable stayed Merah Putih Bridge is a landmark in the city and the largest in eastern Indonesia. Its colors are said to symbolize both Christians and Muslims, creating yet another symbol of peace and solidarity in Ambon.
