• Once a prison and now one of the island’s best beaches, Dois Rios is fewer than four miles from Abraão via dirt road. After swimming or sunbathing, check out the prison ruins and Museu do Cárcere to get a sense of the area’s somewhat notorious past.
   
• Take the trail that begins at the eastern end of Abraão’s town beach to reach Praia Lopes Mendes, which some consider Brazil’s most beautiful beach (or rent a boat, if time is an issue). This is where the sparkling white beaches overlooking the Atlantic Ocean meet waves that are great for surfing, with boards available to rent.
