Overview
Point Pelee National Park, located in Southwestern Ontario, is a unique and ecologically significant natural gem. As the southernmost tip of mainland Canada, this narrow, pointed peninsula juts dramatically into Lake Erie, creating a mosaic of diverse habitats including marshes, woodlands, savannahs, and sandy beaches. Despite being Canada's second smallest national park, it is one of its most ecologically diverse, earning recognition as a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance.
Point Pelee is globally renowned as a major stopover point for migratory birds and monarch butterflies, making it a world-class destination for naturalists and birdwatchers, especially during the spring and fall migrations. Beyond its abundant wildlife, the park offers visitors opportunities for tranquil walks along boardwalks, paddling through serene marshes, cycling through Carolinian forests, and simply experiencing the unique feeling of standing at the very edge of Canada. It's a place where nature's beauty and the rhythms of migration take center stage.
Take the shuttle (seasonal) or walk to The Tip, the southernmost point of mainland Canada. This narrow, sandy spit extends dramatically into Lake Erie, allowing you to experience being surrounded by water on three sides. It's a truly unique geographical landmark and a fantastic photo opportunity.
Tip: The shape of The Tip changes constantly due to natural erosion and deposition, so each visit offers a slightly different view. The shuttle service (April-October) makes it easily accessible.
Immerse yourself in one of the largest remaining freshwater marshes in the Great Lakes system by walking the Marsh Boardwalk. This fully accessible 1-kilometer loop winds through cattail marsh and open water, featuring an observation tower that offers stunning views and excellent opportunities for birdwatching and spotting other marsh wildlife like turtles, muskrats, and frogs.
Tip: Visit in the early morning or late afternoon for the best wildlife viewing and photographic lighting. Rent a canoe nearby (seasonal) for a different perspective of the marsh.
Point Pelee is a birder's paradise, with over 370 bird species recorded. During the spring (mid-April to late May) and fall (late August to October) migrations, the park becomes a hub of avian activity as thousands of birds stop over. Look for warblers, raptors, and countless other species.
Tip: Check the park's website or visitor center for recent sightings and participate in the annual Festival of Birds in spring for guided walks and special events.
Bring your own bike or rent one seasonally at the park to cycle the flat, paved park road (9 km) or the various multi-use trails. Biking offers a great way to cover more ground and explore the diverse habitats, from dense Carolinian forest to open savannah.
Tip: The park road has a 40 km/h speed limit, making it family-friendly. Remember to stay on designated trails to protect sensitive ecosystems.
Enjoy the tranquil beauty of Point Pelee's sandy beaches, which stretch for 20 kilometers along both the east and west sides of the peninsula. In summer, Lake Erie warms up, making it suitable for swimming, or you can simply relax and enjoy the serene waterfront.
Tip: Northwest Beach is a popular family favorite with picnic shelters and washrooms, while other stretches offer more solitude.
Walk the DeLaurier Homestead & Trail (1.2 km loop) to learn about Point Pelee's human history. This trail winds through old farm fields and woodlands, featuring interpretive panels that tell the story of the First Peoples, early settlers, and the park's evolution from farmland to a natural conservation area.
Tip: This trail offers a blend of natural beauty and historical insight, providing a good understanding of the land's past uses.
