Puerto Princesa, Philippines Cruise Port

If "clean and green" is important when you travel, then the lovely cruise port of Puerto Princesa on the western provincial island of Palawan in the Philippines is a must-see. Within the Honda Bay off of the Sulu Sea, it's not only a base of operations for trips to the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park, but also a haven for divers. The city's name is sometimes linked to a princess-like maiden from local folklore, while some called it as such because it was the "princess of ports," thanks to perfect geological features. Historically, the city was named after the daughter of Spain's Queen Isabella II, Princess Asuncion. By the late 1800s, Puerto Princesa was recognized as one of the most beautiful towns in the Philippines, and is today considered the Eco-Tourism Center of the country. Listed below are some of our favorite experiences when cruising to Puerto Princesa, Philippines:

  • The Puerto Princesa Underground River and park is custom-made for adventurous types. A protected area about 50 miles north of the city, the park's highlight is the underground river's surreal-looking formation, featuring waterfalls inside the cave (along with large bats and marine animals). The park as a whole has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of its biodiversity.

  • Nor far from the city center, Honda Bay is a great spot for catching tours and hopping around the other area islands. If you want an outing that includes pristine white beaches as well as fantastic snorkeling and diving, this is the place to start. You can also hang out at the beach here, but the other islands tend to be more favored by tourists.

  • For some climbing, Ugong Rock offers adventures in trekking as well as cave spelunking. For an extra thrill, fly down the zipline, reportedly the fastest in the country.

  • Those interested in religious history (or architecture) can take in the 19th-century Immaculate Conception Cathedral, not far from port. One of the city's more famous destinations, the blue-colored cathedral with its pointed symmetrical arches is as lovely as the interior, bathed in light on a sunny day.
