Neiafu, Vavau Cruise Port

The South Pacific archipelago of Tonga is a fantastic place to go to get lost, thanks to remote islands and sandy white beaches. The cruise port of Neiafu, Vava'u is northern Tonga's fifth-largest town, with all of 6,000 residents – although it's an important area for tourism. The capital city of Vava'u, it's located next to the deep-water harbor called the Port of Refuge, considered one of the best in the world. Snorkeling and diving are popular pastimes, thanks to the crystal clear lagoons, underground caves, and coral gardens surrounding the island. From June to November, the warm waters are a haven for humpback whales to give birth to and care for newly-born calves. The first of its kind in Tonga, the ?Ene?io Botanical Garden contains a large and varied plant collection, privately owned and developed by Haniteli Fa’anunu. After getting a tour of the spectacular array of native and exotic plant species and even enjoying a Tongan feast on the grounds, you can enjoy ocean access to nearby ‘Ene’io Beach.
Since the area is known for its whales and dolphins, catching a tour to see these amazing animals in action is easy. Not only can you view them from the boat, but some companies offer the chance to swim with these gentle sea creatures.
Above the Port of Refuge you'll find St. Joseph's Cathedral with its understated colonial style architecture – although the inside is a study in contrasts, thanks to the colorful crucifixion scene behind the altar. Anyone lucky enough to sit in on Sunday mass will hear the stellar choir whose singing is out of this world.
