Little Bay, Montserrat, Leeward Islands Cruise Port

Those who can't get enough of the Caribbean may have cruised to Montserrat in the Leeward Islands; while its former capital has been out of commission since 1997 after the eruption of the Soufriere Hills volcano, a new capital is on its way: the cruise port of Little Bay, Montserrat (which may undergo a name change when it's construction is complete). Little Bay is currently the only port on the island, and mostly industrial in nature. However, ongoing developments are working to make this a full-scale tourist area in the years to come. Little Bay is near the current de facto capital of Brades in the northwest Montserrat, and north of St. Peters. The Collins River flows into Little Bay on its way to the sea, ending at a palm tree-lined harbor with sandy beaches. Here are some of our favorite experiences when cruising to Little Bay, Leeward Islands, Montserrat:

  • Since the original capital city of Plymouth was buried, volcano viewing areas are especially popular here. One of them is Jack Boy Hill, which provides an excellent vantage point of destroyed eastern villages and WH Bramble Airport (among others), along with the volcano itself. The blossoming grounds where you can enjoy a nice lunch are a weird contrast to the devastation from the volcano.

  • If you want to hit a white sandy beach, Rendezvous Bay has the only one on Montserrat. It's fairly basic and has no facilities, and you will have to walk bit of a hike to reach it (less than a mile from Little Bay), or get there via boat shuttle.

  • Diving in the Caribbean is always amazing, and Little Bay's Scuba Montserrat provides equipment and training. They can also rent you kayaks and snorkeling gear, and will even give you a tour of the buried city of Plymouth by boat – as close as legally allowed.

  • The National Museum of Montserrat shows exhibits showing island history and culture; don't miss the display on the island's production of lime juice. Next door is the Montserrat Cultural Centre, which was initiated by none other than Beatles producer George Martin.
