Fiskardo, Cephalonia Island Cruise Port

For a vacation where ancient history and nature meet, this is a bit of paradise. Part of Greece, the cruise port of Fiskardo, Cephalonia Island (or Kefalonia, as it’s called in the area) includes a long bay and dense forest that are protected by Greek law as areas of great natural beauty. Dating back as far as possibly the 5th century B.C., new projects in Fiskardo keep uncovering artefacts from days gone by; one such projects took place in 2006, where construction for a new hotel resulted in a Roman-era complex the size of a small house, full of gold, clay pots, ceremonial clothing, and many other items. Today, this small town of fewer than 300 residents is a tourist’s delight, especially for the area’s many beaches and other outdoor activities available here. Listed below are a handful of our favorite experiences when cruising to Fiskardo, Cephalonia Island:
  • With a town surrounded by excellent beaches, it's hard to pick just one. Emblisi Beach stands out because it's a little less touristy, and you won't find a ton of amenities. What you will find is a gorgeous view with crystal-clear water where you can watch the fish swim, and olive trees to provide shade from the sun.
  • The Venetian Lighthouse of Fiskardo provides an excellent view of the harbor and of nearby Ithaca. There's a newer lighthouse nearby which isn't nearly as decorative; past the new lighthouse, you'll find the ruins of Byzantine basilica that date back to around the 6th century.
  • When it's time to get those land legs back, hike the Cypress Trail. While not particularly difficult, you'll definitely need good walking shoes. The path will take you through a small settlement, past the St. Gerasimos church, and through multiple other sights (including the Foki beach for a quick swim) before ending at the Tselentata village.
  • For adventures under the Ionian Sea, the Fiskardo Divers will take you to see caves, wrecks, reefs, and a downed Bristol Beaufort World War II bomber plane. Thanks to the clear waters here, you can get dive to an amazing 130 feet.
